The UK Department for Culture, Media, and Sport has recently announced the implementation of stake limits for online slot games starting in September 2024.

The set limits for online slots will be as follows:

– A maximum stake of £2 for individuals aged 18 to 24

– A maximum stake of £5 for adults aged 25 and above

Following a thorough 10-week consultation period, the decision to enforce these stake limits was made based on the predominant feedback received. Various stakeholders, including industry representatives, academia, treatment providers, and individuals, widely supported the proposal outlined in the gambling white paper.

This initiative aims to set statutory limits for online slot games as a preventive measure against the potential risks associated with gambling and betting.

18-24 age group with most problems

Data from the Office for Health Improvement and Disparities reveals that the 18-24 age group exhibits the highest average problem gambling score within any demographic, despite having the lowest disposable income.

Additionally, statistics from NHS surveys highlight that problem gambling related to online activities like slots, casino games, or bingo is at a concerning 8.7%. This percentage signifies one of the highest rates observed in the gambling sector.

“Although millions of people gamble safely every single day, the evidence shows that there is a significantly higher problem gambling rate for online slot games. We also know that young adults can be more vulnerable when it comes to gambling related harms, which is why we committed to addressing both of these issues in our white paper.” said Stuart Andrew (Gambling Minister) and continued:

“The growing popularity of online gambling is clear to see, so this announcement will level the playing field with the land-based sector and is the next step in a host of measures being introduced this year that will protect people from gambling harms.”
